Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a significant global health security threat, with inappropriate antimicrobial use being one of the primary drivers. Through the support of the Fleming Fund through the MAAP 2 project and the leadership of the African Society of Laboratory Medicine (ASLM), countries across Africa have made progress in surveillance, with growing investments in automated tools such as the R/GitHub-based platform for AMR, and AMC/AMU analysis. However, several country stakeholders (e.g., Ghana, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Cameroon) have emphasized the need for foundational methodological training to build in-house expertise on AMC/AMU and AMR data analysis.

While the automation tools provide efficiency and standardization, countries require the technical grounding to understand underlying methodologies, validate results, and apply insights for policy and stewardship. Without this methodological training, countries risk dependency on external expertise and reduced sustainability of surveillance systems.
